When Photography Meets Skin Cancer Awareness

The photography book project Spotted Realities, was created by documentary photographer Anna Bedyńska in collaboration with the non-profit organization Spot the Dot. I had the honor of contributing as one of the medical proofreaders and supporters. Spotted Realities is a unique art book that connects photography with an important health message: raising awareness about skin cancer. Within more than 200 pages, the book features over 70 photographs captured in Tokyo, revealing the subtle beauty of everyday “dots” in urban life while inviting readers to reflect on the dots on their own skin.

Through this creative approach, the project encourages us to look more closely, not only at the world around us, but also at our own skin. Awareness, prevention, and early detection remain essential in the fight against melanoma and other types of skin cancer. As a dermatologist and long-time supporter of Spot the Dot, I deeply value initiatives that bring together art, science, and public health. Projects like Spotted Realities help start meaningful conversations and inspire people to pay attention to their skin.

The book contains information in German, English, Dutch, Polish and Japanese.
